I’ve worked with thousands of dental practices implementing Dental Sleep Medicine, observing what works and what doesn’t – noting behavioral traits and organizational skillsets that lead to high achievement and those that lead to floundering, flailing, failing, and bailing.
I interviewed dentists, authors, team members, DSM gurus, sleep neophytes, and experts from various industries. And then synthesized this information into an easy to read, highly actionable book to help you better communicate with your patients, team, referring physicians, and just about everyone in your world.

HOW IT BEGAN
IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY
I read a lot of books across many topics. I also wrote and produced a music publication, booked bands, created a wildly successful annual music festival, and created an independent music distribution company. This was all before the ubiquity of the internet – even before those “AOL 50 Free Hours of Internet Access” CDs would show up in your mail. Wasting time, garnering experience, and studying. Everything.
After years of banditry with scalawags, I began working in management and procurement. Shifting gears again, I moved into dentistry and headed up the bite splint business unit at a large dental laboratory. We introduced the NTI and marketed the bejeezus out of it taking it from the inventor’s garage to a household name in dental practices around the world. Heeding the voice of the customer, we also introduced sleep appliances to our offerings. The market wasn’t as developed as it is now. Home sleep testing was viewed as voodoo. Medical billing for appliances was a rarity, and the product options were extremely limited. Eventually I invented a proprietary appliance still sold by that lab network.
I led a team of 60 people responsible for the marketing, manufacturing, selling, and education surrounding these products. I learned a ton about bruxism, splint therapy, medical insurance, process improvement, management, team dynamics, leadership, and communication. I lectured extensively, penned articles, developed educational programs, and was a ball of stress 92% of the time.

NEW ADVENTURES
I joined a Dental Sleep Medicine software startup as one of the first handful of employees. The company had a novel product with immense market potential but lacked many of the skills and experience I’d previously acquired. Together, we leveraged our knowledge, experience, and grit to create the most popular DSM EMR product. We diversified the offerings to include medical billing, myriad strategic partnerships, a quarterly magazine, and the North American Dental Sleep Medicine Symposium. When hired, we had approximately 100 clients. At the end of my tenure, we had nearly 10x.

NEW VENTURES
Feeling constrained, I branched out again to start Transform Dental Sleep with Elias Kalantzis who previously co-founded Pristine Medical Billing, SleepTest.com, and OSA University. Our aim was to help dental companies acquire more of their ideal clients through enhanced messaging, brand management, and professional networking.
Oh yeah, I also served as Editor in Chief of Dental Sleep Practice magazine and co-hosted the ZZZ Pack podcast with Dr. Erin Elliott.
